How balanced roof ventilation works

Most passive attic systems pair lower intake openings with higher exhaust openings so outside air can move through the attic.

Intake ventilation

Soffit or edge vents provide incoming air. Blocked intake can limit the performance of ridge or roof exhaust vents.

Ridge vents

A slot near the ridge is covered by a manufactured vent and cap shingles or metal trim. Correct slot width and weather protection matter.

Other exhaust vents

Box vents, turbines, powered fans, and gable vents behave differently and should not be mixed casually with another exhaust strategy.

Air sealing and insulation
