Common residential configurations

Furnace plus central AC

A fuel-burning or electric furnace provides heat while a split air-conditioning system provides cooling, often sharing the blower and ducts.

Air-source heat pump

One refrigerant system provides heating and cooling, sometimes paired with electric or fuel-based backup heat for colder conditions.

Ductless mini-split

One or more indoor units connect to outdoor equipment and can provide zoned heating and cooling without conventional ductwork.

Boiler or hydronic system

Heated water or steam serves radiators or radiant distribution; cooling, if present, is usually a separate system.

Efficiency and comfort factors

  • SEER2 and EER2 describe cooling efficiency under defined test conditions.
  • HSPF2 describes seasonal heat-pump heating efficiency; AFUE applies to fuel-burning furnace efficiency.
  • Equipment ratings do not correct poor sizing, duct leakage, weak airflow, insulation gaps, or installation errors.
  • Variable-capacity equipment and zoning can improve comfort in suitable designs but add controls and commissioning requirements.

The highest published efficiency is not automatically the best value for every home. Climate, utility rates, load, duct condition, serviceability, incentives, and expected ownership period all matter.

  • Are indoor and outdoor components an approved efficiency-rated match?
  • What duct, electrical, drainage, venting, fuel, controls, or permit work is included?
